Lakers Cruise To Victory Over Trolls In Season Finale

Box Score

CHICAGO – Roosevelt's two seniors combined for the game-winning block on Senior Night, propelling the Lakers to a three-set victory over Trinity Christian in the season finale for both squads Thursday night at the Goodman Center.

The Lakers let four match points slip by in the third set against the Trolls due to three consecutive errors. Trinity Christian rotated the ball to the left side and set up for another kill, but Jessa Henry and Alyssa Stilley were there to reject the kill and the ball slammed to the floor. Stilley ended the match with a part in four of the five total blocks the Lakers had in the match.

Henry finished with 21 assists and four kills in the victory after being honored pregame along with Stilley. In addition to the traditional Senior Night festivities, Henry was also presented a game ball for becoming the fourth Lakers player to ever reach 1,000 career assists. Stilley also had five kills in her final match with Roosevelt.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to capture much momentum. The Lakers built a 23-19 lead then surrendered the next four points as the set hung in the balance. This time, Stilley teamed up with Emily DeBlecourt on a block to set up set point then Viktoria Marysheva smashed down one of her 13 kills to capture the first set 25-23. Marysheva threw down eight kills in the opening set to pace the Lakers offense.

Roosevelt took control of the second set early with a 6-1 run to build a five-point lead and continued to add points on its service. When it felt like the Trolls might fight their way back into the set, the Lakers had a response in the form of Logan Cofield. The junior had a season-best 13 kills in the match, five of which came in the middle set. It was an impressive offensive performance for Cofield, who finished with a .462 hitting percentage in the match.

It was a similar story in the third set as Roosevelt quickly built a lead and extended it to as many as eight points. It stayed at eight points with the Lakers leading 24-16 before the untimely errors delayed the inevitable. Cofield and Marysheva each had four kills in the final set for the Lakers, a good sign for the future of the program.

The Lakers wrapped up their season with a 7-20 record overall and a 6-11 mark in the CCAC, which left them in 10th place in the league.
