Box Score CHICAGO – With a large crowd in attendance for the Roosevelt University women's volleyball program's annual "Dig Pink" event for breast cancer awareness, the fans were treated to an exciting and entertaining match from start to finish. Unfortunately, the Lakers lost a heartbreaking CCAC Conference match in five sets to Indiana University Northwest on Thursday, October 21 at the Goodman Center, dropping the Lakers overall record to 3-21 and their conference record to 0-13 this season.
In the opening set, the Lakers broke a 5-5 tie with three straight points to take an 8-5 lead and pushed that lead to 15-8. The RedHawks made a surge and cut the margin to 18-15 before the Lakers came back with the next four points to lead 22-15 before closing out the stanza 25-19 to take a 1-0 match lead.
Roosevelt scored the first three points of the second set and jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. However, Indiana Northwest went on a 12-4 run to push ahead at 14-11, but the Lakers answered back to regain the lead and hold a 22-20 advantage late. Two straight points by the RedHawks evened things up at 22-22-22, but RU got a kill from Kara Sleeper to go ahead 23-22. However, the RedHawks scored the next three points to win the set 25-23 and even the match at 1-1.
The Lakers took another early lead in the third set, this time building a 5-3 advantage before the RedHawks put together a strong run, overtaking the Lakers and going ahead 16-9. IUN maintained its lead late and were on the verge of putting the set away with a 23-15 margin. However, the Lakers dug down deep, scoring the next nine points to stymie the RedHawks and serve for set point at 24-23 with Viktoria Marysheva picking up three kills during the run. The two teams battled back and forth with the Lakers finally taking the set at 29-27 to hold a 2-1 match advantage.
The fourth set began like the previous two with the Lakers once again taking an early lead, this time going ahead 6-3 and pushing their lead to 11-6. The RedHawks fought back, tying the set at 14-14 and continuing their momentum to lead 22-17. RU climbed to within a point at 22-21, but IUN scored the set's final three points to tie the match at 2-2.
The fifth and deciding set appeared to be all Lakers, with the home team racing out to a 12-6 lead, but the RedHawks had other ideas. The visitors pulled to within 13-11 before a Viktoria Marysheva kill set the home team up for match point. However, the RedHawks fought off three match points to tie things up at 14-14 and fought off another match point before serving for their own game wining chance at 16-15. Nicole Darin came through with a big kill to keep RU alive, but IUN scored the next two points to win the set 18-16 and the match 3-2.
