Late Third-Quarter Run Pushes Indiana Northwest Past Visiting Roosevelt

GARY, Ind. – The Roosevelt women's basketball team led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter before host Indiana Northwest surged ahead thanks to a 20-2 run to close the stanza and propel the RedHawks past the Lakers, 75-68, at the Savannah Center on Wednesday night.

Lindzy Cox led the Lakers (7-20, 6-13 CCAC) with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Ashley Smoldt scored 11 points and JayShari Chears added 10 points.

Breanna Boles came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points for the RedHawks (10-17, 7-12 CCAC), who had a 43-11 advantage in reserve scoring and a 20-point advantage on points in the paint.

Roosevelt broke open a close game in the early going with a 27-17 second quarter, leading by as many as 12. Lindzy Cox opened with a nine-point first quarter and finished the half with 14, while Tanea White had a big second with a 3-for-3 showing from three-point range during the second 10-minute session to send the Green and White to a 10-point lead at intermission.

The Lakers held their firm lead midway through the third until Indiana Northwest went on its big run, holding the Lakers to just two free throws made by Chears during the final five minutes of the quarter to turn a 14-point deficit into a four-point lead.

Roosevelt fought back, trailing by seven early in the fourth but getting the IUN lead down to one with 3:36 left after Cox sank two free throws.

However, Indiana Northwest proceeded to go on a 7-0 burst that made it an eight-point game with just under two minutes to play, and the Lakers could get no closer than five with 21 ticks left as the guests' rally came up short.

Roosevelt tangles with TigerBall as 24th-ranked Olivet Nazarene comes to the Goodman Center this Saturday at 1 p.m.
