Volleyball Opens CCAC Slate With Four-Set Win Versus Governors State

CHICAGO - Makenzie Cooper's match-high 14 kills and a stellar start propelled the Roosevelt volleyball team to its first CCAC win of the 2019 season, as the Lakers defeated Governors State in the league lid-lifter by a final of 25-9, 25-16, 18-25, 25-18 inside the Goodman Center on Tuesday night.

Cooper had another double-double, her third, by adding on 10 digs to go with a .310 attack percentage. Fellow outside hitter Kendra Lee slammed down 12 kills to go with her contest-best 15 digs for the Lakers (5-4, 1-0 CCAC), who won their conference opener for the first time in four years.

Mallory Nickelson led all players with 25 assists, while Mackenzie Bell had 17 helpers, 10 digs and nine kills to approach triple-double territory.

Ivana Novakovic led the Jaguars (2-7, 0-1 CCAC) with 12 kills.

Roosevelt overwhelmed the guests in the opening set by connecting at a blistering .435 clip, registering 12 kills with only two miscues on 23 attempts, and allowing just nine visitor points.

The Lakers continued their offensive strength in set two, posting 14 kills and just four errors, as GSU kept the second stanza a bit closer.

The Green and White hit a bump in the road in the third set, as Governors State saw Roosevelt commit 12 attack errors to avoid the sweep and force a fourth frame.

But the Lakers took control in the fourth and pulled away at the end, with a Cooper kill setting up match point and the returning Daphyne Turner ending the contest with a kill of her own.

Roosevelt hits the road to participate in the Five Points Bank Classic hosted by Hastings (Neb.) this weekend.
