MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Monica Munoz scored the game's only goal in the 59th minute, and emergency goalkeeper Aisley Njissang stepped in to post a clean sheet and help the Roosevelt women's soccer team defeat host Bethel (Ind.), 1-0, at Morey Field on Wednesday.
Njissang made five saves in her first collegiate performance between the posts as the result of keepers Kelsey Heaton (illness) and Sara Hernandez (injury) missing the match, and the two-sport athlete stood tall as she usually does in the spring when in the circle or the batter's box for the Roosevelt softball team.
The RU defense snuffed out any threats from the Pilots, and the Lakers (1-0-1) used their offense to press ahead and unleash 17 shots and 13 against frame.
One of those shots on goal resulted in the game's only score, and not surprisingly it came from Munoz. The fifth-year senior, who missed all of last season due to injury after an All-CCAC First Team campaign the previous fall, looked to be in form and scored her second goal of the second early in the second half.
Munoz took seven shots, helping the Lakers maintain plenty of possession and pressure to put the Pilots away and secure the first win of 2019 and of first-year Roosevelt head coach Luke Blakely's tenure.
Roosevelt concludes its three-game road regular-season stretch to open the season with a game at Clarke (Iowa) this Sunday.
