CHICAGO - The Roosevelt volleyball team overcame a tough start to force a fourth frame, but the Lakers couldn't force a fifth and decisive set despite a closely-contested end in a 25-16, 25-11, 18-25, 25-22 road loss to Saint Xavier at the Shannon Center on Tuesday night.
Roosevelt (6-13, 1-6 CCAC) hit .-.040 in the first set and -.227 in the second set to dig a 2-0 hole against the Cougars (5-11, 3-4 CCAC).
The Lakers continued to fight and hit .280, with 10 kills and just three errors, in the third set to force a fourth.
SXU went up seven in the fourth before Roosevelt mounted a comeback that got the deficit down to two, but the Cougars were too close to match point and time ran out on the Lakers.
Makenzie Cooper and Kara Sleeper had eight kills apiece, with Sleeper returning from injury and committing just three attack errors to pace the Roosevelt attack.
Cooper had 13 digs, while Mallory Nickelson had 17 assists. Mackenzie Bell added 12 assists and Amy Stumpf had 11 digs.
Roosevelt hosts Olivet Nazarene at the Goodman Center this Thursday at 7 p.m.
