CHICAGO – Nadia Thorman-McKey scored a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers while Becca Bergman tallied 13 points to surpass 1,000 career points, leading the Roosevelt women's basketball team to a 60-59 upset of 13th-ranked St. Francis (Ill.) inside the Goodman Center on Saturday.
Jordan Fierst made the tying and go-ahead free throws with 11 seconds left in regulation, and the Lakers (14-10, 7-7 CCAC) withstood two chances for the conference-leading Fighting Saints (17-6, 12-2 CCAC) to tie or take the lead in the waning moments.
Thorman-McKey went 10-for-16 from the floor to go with four assists and four steals, while Bergman made a pair of shots from downtown and dished out four helpers as she became the sixth player in Roosevelt history to score 1,000 points.
Bergman, a four-year standout, entered the afternoon with 998 points and finished the game at 1,011.
"I am so proud of our team for the accountability, body language, communication, togetherness, toughness, and willingness that we showed today," Roosevelt head coach Keisha Newell said. "This was an amazing win."
The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak to St. Francis, and it was Roosevelt's second win of the season over a Top 25 team.
Kaitlin Aylward had a double-double of 16 points and 13 boards for USF.
Roosevelt jumped out to a 30-14 lead by the second quarter, using a strong defensive effort that allowed the Fighting Saints to make just one of 11 shots in the second.
St. Francis made it a game after halftime, chipping away with improved shooting and a 64-percent clip in the fourth. The Lakers did everything they could to keep their lead and keep the nationally-ranked guests at a multi-shot distance.
Eventually USF cut the deficit down to one with 90 ticks left, and Aylward capitalized on an RU turnover by making a go-ahead jumper with 53 seconds on the clock.
Both teams couldn't change the score with opportunities on each end, and after Bergman missed a shot, Fierst battled for a rebound and was fouled going up for a bucket. The sophomore forward, who had been 1-for-4 at the line before her next trip to the stripe, calmly sank a pair of huge free throws to turn the game into the Lakers' favor.
Ivana Markovic was fouled on the other end, but she missed both free throws, and after Fierst missed two free throws on the other end, the Saints had another chance to win the game in the final seconds. But the Lakers' defense stood stout and forced a travel by Jordan Pyle, and Bergman held the ball after the inbounds play to secure the win.
Roosevelt hosts St. Ambrose this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Goodman Center.
