DEERFIELD, Ill. – The Roosevelt volleyball team played some of its best volleyball of the year on the final day of the CCAC Crossover hosted by Trinity International on Saturday, narrowly falling in four to Indiana South Bend before bouncing back to defeat Governors State in four frames.
Roosevelt (2-17, 2-7 CCAC) hung tough in every stanza against the Titans (6-12, 4-4 CCAC), falling 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15.
After falling in the first set to Governors State (6-17, 2-6 CCAC), the Lakers stormed back to take three sets in a row to defeat the Jaguars by a final of 25-27, 25-21, 25-22, 25-11.
Daria Voronina shined in victory with what might be considered her best performance as a Laker. She led all players with 21 kills and just five errors while posting five digs and a pair of blocks.
Kendra Lee bounced back from a 13-error outing against IUSB with 15 kills and just five miscues against the Jaguars. She also had 13 digs and two blocks.
Kara Sleeper added seven kills and just one error against GSU, while Paula Gross led all players with 21 digs and added nine assists. Mallory Nickelson led the Lakers with two helpers and chipped in 11 digs, while Mackenzie Bell turned in 14 assist, three kills and four digs.
Jessica Ratajczak turned in four kills versus GSU as the Lakers scored 25 points in every set and hit a whopping .455 (12 kills, two errors in 22 attacks) in the final frame.
Lee had 12 kills and 16 digs against IUSB, while Sydney Mishler had 10 kills and Voronina added nine kills. Dapyhne Turner had two solo blocks and five block assists, while Sleeper added six kills to just two errors.
Roosevelt was neck and neck with the Titans in the first three sets, eventually breaking through with a third-set win. But IUSB pulled away with a big rally in the fourth to seal the win for its side.
The Lakers return to Deerfield for a single match against the TIU Trojans on Tuesday night before hosting its Dig Pink Night on Thursday, Oct. 11 against rival Robert Morris Illinois inside the Goodman Center at 7 p.m. The Dig Pink festivities support the Side-Out Foundation in the fight against breast cancer and the fight for breast cancer research and programming.
