JOLIET, Ill. – Meghan McCue headed in the game-winning goal with 70 seconds left in regulation to lift the Roosevelt women's soccer team to its second consecutive victory, a 2-1 result over host St. Francis (Ill.) at ATI Field inside Joliet Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.
Alyciah Gutierrez ignited the scoring with a goal of her own just 38 seconds into the match for the Lakers (2-9-1, 2-5-0 CCAC), who made the most of their four shots on goal while the Fighting Saints (1-10-2, 0-6-1 CCAC) dominated possession and unleashed 34 shots.
Kara Jones made save after save to keep Roosevelt in the game, as the senior keeper stopped nine shots and snuffed out a seemingly-endless amount of USF threats alongside her Roosevelt defensive mates.
Gutierrez gathered a ball from Morgan Erickson and rushed up the right side and unfurled a wicked shot over the keeper and under the crossbar for a fast start for the Green and White.
St. Francis started to take control of the ball and pose a constant danger toward Jones and Co., beginning a span of possession by the hosts that limited Roosevelt chances on the other end for the remainder of the first half.
The Saints leveled in the 37th minute when Casey Harris, who took a match-high 11 shots, made a long run that resulted in a clean shot past Jones for the equalizer.
The match stayed even despite the Saints controlling possession early in the second half, but the Lakers stood firm and waited for their opportune time to score.
That came in the 89th minute, as Zoey Bezilla sent a ball toward McCue's noggin. The junior from Grasylake beat the defender marking her to snap off a tremendous header that sailed over keeper Ellie Provo and into the net for a dramatic tally.
Roosevelt was able to let the clock wind down to zero for a huge win on the road.
The Lakers host their regular season finale this Saturday, October 20th against Judson at Kroc Stadium, 1250 W. 119th Street in Chicago, at 1 p.m. The match will be preceded by Senior Day festivities to honor Jones, Cynthia Gutierrez, Emilia Rogowski and Brennan Sullivan.
