MISHAWAKA, Ind. - First-half goals scored by Anna Agboola and Chelsea Olson put the Roosevelt women's soccer firmly in the lead early, and the Lakers held on against host Bethel (Ind.) by a final of 3-2 at Morey Field on Wednesday evening.
Agboola assisted on Olson's last goal and Kara Jones continued to excel between the posts with 10 saves in victory for the Lakers (1-3-0), who claimed their first decision of the young 2017 season.
Almost 10 minutes in it was Agboola who struck first on a second-touch beauty off a ball from Monica Munoz, and less than 20 minutes later it was Julia Schultz crossing a ball to Munoz for a quick find of Olson for an 18-yard shot and score.
Olson then gathered a ball from Agboola in the 39th minute and struck for a key insurance goal that put the Lakers up 3-0 at the time and gave the senior a pair of strikes on the night.
Just a few minutes later the Pilots (1-2-2) finally got on the board thanks to a goal scored by reserve Ana Molina.
The score stayed 3-1 thanks to Roosevelt's defense and timely saves by Jones, who registered her fourth straight double-digit saves showing to open the campaign.
Bethel was awarded a penalty kick in the 75th minute that was converted by Rebecca Kanpol, cutting the Lakers' lead down to one.
However, Roosevelt was able to withstand the Pilots' late charge for an equalizer thanks to late stops by Jones and a continued push ahead by the offense, and the Lakers were able to claim a satisfying road victory.
