BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Visiting Cardinal Stritch's goal in the fifth minute proved to be the only offense necessary, as the Roosevelt men's soccer team fell to the Wolves by a final of 1-0 at Toyota Park on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
The result combined with Olivet Nazarene's loss at Trinity International gave Stritch (12-3-1, 9-1-1 CCAC) the CCAC regular season championship.
Scott Evans used a back-and-forth passing connection with Salvador Nunez near the face of goal with 4:40 elapsed in the match to convert a quick shot into the net for an early advantage that stunned the host Lakers (8-8-0, 7-3-0 CCAC).
Stritch controlled possession for the first half. After intermission, the Lakers regrouped and created more constant pressure to get the equalizer.
Despite unleashing eight second-half shots and getting close-range quality looks in front of the frame, Roosevelt was unable to level.
Prior to the match, head coach Graham Brennan and the Lakers honored its senior class. Jose Garcia, Gary Mendoza, Marino Lopez and Josue Leal were celebrated for their efforts the past four seasons, which includes Roosevelt's first-ever CCAC regular season and tournament championships and NAIA National Championship Tournament bid in 2015.
Roosevelt closes the 2017 regular season this Tuesday with its rescheduled match at Holy Cross (Ind.). Once the dust has settled from the finish of the regular season, Roosevelt will learn of its CCAC Tournament matchup details. That information will be announced on RooseveltLakers.com as soon as it is confirmed.
