ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Fynn Mewes blasted a corner kick into the far corner of the goal to help Roosevelt salvage a 1-1 tie against Upper Iowa on Thursday at Morris Field.
The graduate student picked up where he left off last season as the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year was clinical in his finish. Mewes collected the corner kick from Alexander Panduro and settled into onto his right foot before blasting it into the far corner. The German attacker registered all three shots on frame for the Lakers, continuously creating danger with the ball at his feet.
Roosevelt (0-0-1) was able to dominate possession for most of the game and put plenty of pressure on the Peacocks defenders. However, none of their 10 shot attempts in the first half hit the target with five first-half corner kicks fizzling out. The Lakers had four more corners in the second half with Mewes burying his chance off one of them.
Upper Iowa had the first major chance in the game just 68 seconds into the contest when Julian Mendoza had to kick away a shot from point-blank range. The ball still nearly rolled into the goal before it was cleared off the line at the last second by the Lakers defense.
Mendoza made three saves in the first half of his first career start, but he was put into a rough situation midway through the first half when the Lakers gave away a penalty. The Peacocks scored on the attempt and Mendoza finished with four saves while the action most took place away from him.
Luis Sanchez had a great chance early in the second half to equalize, but his well-hit shot rang off the right post and bounced just out of reach of the charging Roosevelt attacker. The Lakers had plenty of other quality possession around the Upper Iowa penalty area, but were not able to finish off that ball control efficiently.
