ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt capitalized on its opportunities to claim a 2-0 upset win over No. 21 Cedarville on Saturday night at Morris Field.
The Lakers (1-0-1) were led by a familiar face as Fynn Mewes scored his second goal in as many games to give them the lead in the first half. Mewes then served up a corner kick that was headed home by Nikola Dimitrijevic in the second half. Cedrik Strupler made five saves in his Roosevelt debut to earn the clean sheet and help the Lakers end Cedarville's 20-game regular-season unbeaten streak.
It didn't take long for Mewes to put Roosevelt into the lead, converting a little more than eight minutes into the contest. A throw-in was volleyed back from the Lakers and Dimitrijevic nodded the through ball to Mewes, who calmly slid the ball past the hard-charging Yellow Jackets goalkeeper.
Cedarville had some chances of its own in the first half, twice barreling in on goal alone. But both times, Strupler came up with a big save to nullify the attack and keep Roosevelt in the lead. The freshman from Switzerland made three saves in the first half then added two relatively calm stops in the second half.
Roosevelt picked up a bit of fortuitous luck in the 76th minute when Mewes' corner kick swung into the box. Dimitrijevic got his head fully around the ball and it initially looked like the Yellow Jackets' keeper made the diving stop. However, the assistant referee ruled the ball had crossed the line, giving the Lakers the all-important second goal.
