Women's Soccer Thunders Past Holy Cross (Ind.), 5-2

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Strikes came from lightning and a plethora of Lakers on Saturday, as the Roosevelt women's soccer team defeated host Holy Cross (Ind.) by a final of 5-2 at a soggy Saints Field.

Roosevelt (4-8, 2-5 CCAC) scored a tick past the ninth minute on Cynthia Gutierrez's second goal in three matches to put the Lakers on top early. Chelsea Olson lended the helping hand on a beautiful corner kick to assist on Gutierrez's goal.

In the 12th minute there was a lightning strike, forcing a halt to the match for 30 minutes to get both sides off the pitch and to safety.

When play resumed, Holy Cross (2-10-2, 0-7-0 CCAC) leveled just a few minutes after the restart when Gabriella Diez's cross found Brooke Strickland for the equalizer.

The score stayed at a standstill until the 42nd minute, when Monica Munoz, back from a leg injury suffered 10 days ago, continued her offensive assault against Roosevelt opponents when she gathered a ball from Anna Agboola and put it in the net for her team-leading seventh goal in 12 contests and the lead for the Lakers once again in the match.

Roosevelt did not wait much longer to pad the lead, as Agboola struck just 44 seconds after Munoz's goal with a tally of her own to make it a two-goal lead heading into intermission.

Agboola did not relent in the second half, as Julia Schultz found her in the 60th minute for another solid look that resulted in Agbool's second goal of the match and her fifth of the fall.

Bella Cuevas cut the Saints' deficit back down to two with a 62nd-minute marker, but Olson returned the favor just 11 minutes later with her fifth of the season to give the Lakers plenty of insurance for the result.

Kara Jones made 10 saves for her eight outing of double-digit saves.

Roosevelt unleashed 30 shots and 12 corner kicks in a wild affair that registered plenty of attempts on both sides and kept each defense on its toes.

The win was Roosevelt's third road victory of the year, compared to just one at home thus far.
