JOLIET, Ill. – The Roosevelt volleyball team split a pair of four-set matches against conference competition on the final day of the first weekend of CCAC Crossover play hosted by St. Francis at the Sullivan Center on Saturday.
The Lakers (5-9, 4-4 CCAC) couldn't rally back from a two-set deficit despite a third-set win and a valiant battle in the fourth frame against Indiana South Bend, falling to the Titans 25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23 in the day's first bout.
Roosevelt then took the first two stanzas of its match against Purdue North Central before holding off the Panthers' comeback and winning in four, 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, to complete the day.
The Green and White received 34 total kills from Brooke Lee in eight sets, including a career-high 22 kills in the win over PNC.
Katie Tozer had a strong day, as the rookie hit .421 and registered nine kills and four blocks, including two solo blocks, in the Lakers' win to finish a 15-kill, six-block day.
Fellow freshman Chelsey Crippen also had a solid showing throughout, with six kills and a .417 attack clip in the victory and five kills against IUSB.
Tozer and Crippen combined for 15 kills and just two errors in 31 total attacks for an efficient pairing in the nightcap.
Roosevelt was balanced against PNC, as Lee's 22-kill, 10-dig showing was complemented with excellent attacking from Tozer, Crippen and Abby Petroelje (nine kills).
Marissa Minturn battled through injury for a 39-assist performance against the Panthers, her second consecutive 30-plus assist display, and Arielle Nausieda had a 20-dig match to end the afternoon.
The Lakers had their chances late in the fourth set against IUSB to send it to a fifth and decisive frame, but the Titans were able to overcome double-digit kill efforts from Lee and Petroelje (10) and hold off the Lakers.
Indiana South Bend hit at a 35 percent rate in the first two sets to take decision before Roosevelt responded with a solid third frame.
Emma Jarvis led the Lakers in the opener with 13 digs.
Roosevelt faces Robert Morris in Arlington Heights on Oct. 6.
