JOLIET, Ill. - Abby Petroelje led all attackers with 13 kills, but the Roosevelt volleyball team saw host St. Francis (Ill.) get off to a hot start and use that momentum to take a 25-15, 28-26, 25-13 win over the Lakers in the opening match of a CCAC Crossover at the Sullivan Center on Friday evening.
Freshman Jaclyn Weilandt turned in nine kills, Arielle Nausieda had 12 digs and Marissa Minturn added 27 assists for the Lakers (4-8, 3-3 CCAC).
The Saints (9-13, 5-2 CCAC) broke open an early one-point affair in the first set with efficient hitting, as St. Francis had 12 kills and one error for a .478 clip that helped the hosts build the lead they carried until the end of the opening frame.
Roosevelt battled in the second stanza, leading in the late stages and having set point on three different occasions thanks to a kill by Petroelje and a pair of kills off the hand of Weilandt, until the Saints knotted it at 26 and took two straight points off a Laker error and an ace.
St. Francis jumped out to an 11-3 advantage in the third set, and the Saints took the final five points en route to a sweep.
The Lakers continued their stay in Joliet with a pair of matches on Saturday, starting with Indiana South Bend at 10 a.m. and wrapping up with Purdue North Central at 2 p.m.
