Early Woes Subdue Women's Basketball At High-Scoring Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Four Lakers finished in double figures, but host Olivet Nazarene's frenetic play created an early deficit and too many turnovers that couldn't be overcome by the Roosevelt women's basketball team in a 107-70 loss at McHie Arena on Saturday.

Young frontcourt stalwarts Jasmine Kyler and Sara Beck contributed 14 points apiece, while Becky Williford had 12 points and three steals and Paige Gallimore added 10 points for the Lakers (7-16, 3-8 CCAC), who were plagued by 30 turnovers.

Carlee Nicolas hit seven 3-pointers en route to 23 points off the bench for the Tigers (16-7, 8-3 CCAC).

Roosevelt connected on 52 percent of its first-half field goal tries, but Laker miscues and a heavy volume of shots by Olivet, the nation's top-scoring team, allowed the hosts to break the game open with a 32-8 stretch that helped the Tigers take a 30-point lead into the break. ONU made nearly as many field goals (24) as Roosevelt attempted (27) in the first 20 minutes, with Olivet connecting on 10 treys, and the Lakers gave up the rock 21 times to give the Tigers extra possessions during a 53-shot opening period.

There was just a seven-point margin in offensive output between the two teams in the second half, but the Tigers' closing of the first half was too much for the Lakers to rally back from.

The Lakers host Trinity International at the Goodman Center next Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
