St. Francis Outlasts Volleyball In Thrilling Five-Set Affair To Open Roosevelt's CCAC Crossover

CHICAGO – The Roosevelt volleyball team rebounded from a first-set loss to St. Francis and won the next two frames, but the Lakers couldn't hold on in a spirited match to open the CCAC Crossover at the Goodman Center on Friday.

Vanessa Owusu led the Lakers (19-14, 7-5 CCAC) with 12 kills along with five total blocks, while Valerie Cutrone added nine kills and 11 digs.

Shelby Kupferschmid led all players with 19 kills for the Saints (22-13, 10-3 CCAC).

Marissa Minturn and Emily Bejma combined for 39 assists, while Arielle Nausieda posted 21 digs.

The Lakers rallied back from a 25-17 defeat in set one to dominate the second stanza with an 11-point match-knotting decision.

Roosevelt then held on for a three-point decision in the third set and nearly had the contest win in its grasp after the Lakers got to within one late in the fourth frame. But St. Francis tallied the next five points to force a deciding fifth set.

The Lakers were up by two early in the fifth set, but the Saints scored five straight again to go up three.

It appeared St. Francis had taken the set 15-10, but a late call handed the Saints an attack error and gave the Lakers new life. Roosevelt then rattled off two more points to make it a 14-13 affair, but Caleigh Hill's kill sealed the deal for the visitors from Joliet.

Roosevelt returns to the court on Saturday for the second day of the CCAC Crossover, beginning at 10 a.m. against Purdue North Central and ending with a 2 p.m. contest against Indiana South Bend.
