WHITING, Ind. - The Roosevelt volleyball team overcame depletion due to injury to salvage a split against Lincoln Christian and Indiana Kokomo on the first day of the Crimson Wave Invitational hosted by Calumet College of St. Joseph on Friday.
The Lakers rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Lincoln Christian, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22, in the first match before falling to IU Kokomo in three, 25-17, 25-20, 27-25.
Roosevelt is now 17-12 on the season.
The rookie duo of Brooke Lee and Abby Petroelje combined for 42 kills, 39 digs and eight blocks in the two matches.
With the Lakers playing shorthanded and only seven players seeing court time in the opener, Roosevelt dropped the first set in narrow two-point fashion before coming alive in the next frame with a 16-kill, one-error second set showing that saw the Lakers hit .455 and win by six.
Roosevelt then took the next two stanzas by three, thanks to the double-digit kill outings by Lee (15), Petroelje (12) and Vanessa Owusu (13). Lee had 13 digs and Petroelje had 15 digs for a pair of double-doubles in the win.
The Lakers couldn't get much going offensively against IU Kokomo, as the Cougars capitalized on 13 Laker miscues on the attack and seven receiving errors by the Green and White for the sweep.
Roosevelt will play twice to cap the Crimson Wave Invitational on Saturday. The Lakers face Indiana Northwest at 9 a.m., followed by Tennesee Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
