JOLIET, Ill. – Freshman Abby Petroelje led the Lakers with a match-high 14 kills against Huntington (Ind.) and 25 total on the day as the Roosevelt volleyball team split a pair of matches at the 2014 Big Guns Classic hosted by St. Francis on Friday evening.
The Lakers swept the Foresters 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 in their opener before falling in four to Graceland (Iowa), 25-22, 26-24, 26-28, 25-17.
Roosevelt is now 15-9 after having its four-match winning streak snapped in the Graceland loss.
The Lakers' attack was ferocious and efficient against Huntington (4-12). The Green and White hit .327 for the match, committing just 11 miscues and registering 48 kills. Petroelje led the way with her 14 kills, while Tori Schrementi had 12 and Vanessa Owusu had 11 to key the sweep.
Marissa Minturn had 26 assists, while Emily Bejma contributed 14 helpers in the win. Emma Jarvis registered a team-best 15 digs at the libero spot.
The Lakers had a tougher time against Graceland (18-6), a team that hit .229 to Roosevelt's cooled-off clip of .136.
Each frame was close, with double-digit kill attackers Petroelje (11), Schrementi (11) and Valerie Cutrone (10) aiding the offensive cause. But 25 attack errors and eight service errors stung the Lakers' attempt to close the deal against the Yellow Jackets, who pulled out a pair of close first and second sets.
Roosevelt used extra play to turn in a 28-26 decision in the third frame, but nine attack errors to just seven kills in the fourth stanza proved costly and allowed Graceland to wrap up the contest.
The Lakers conclude their stay at the Big Guns Classic on Saturday with matches against Missouri Valley at 11 a.m. and Marian at 1 p.m.
