Volleyball Remains Unbeaten With Two Wins At Saint Xavier-Trinity Christian Crossover

CHICAGO - The Roosevelt volleyball team kept its record unblemished after picking up a pair of victories on the first day of the Saint Xavier-Trinity Christian Crossover Tournament at Saint Xavier's Shannon Center on Friday evening.

Roosevelt (4-0) defeated CCAC foe Trinity International by a 25-15, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22 mark in the opening match before rallying to outlast Huntington in a thrilling 25-13, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 16-14 five-set decision.

Reigning CCAC Player of the Week Valerie Cutrone had double-doubles in each match, posting 13 kills and 13 digs against TIU before a 20-kill, 10-dig showing against Huntington.

Vanessa Owusu had 17 kills in the opener and 11 in the nightcap, while Arielle Nausieda totaled 41 digs in nine sets of work. Emily Bodmer added 20 digs in two matches, while Marissa Minturn had a pair of 20-plus assist outings to team with Emily Bejma (35 assists) and solidify the setter position.

Roosevelt beat the Trojans handily in the first set before suffering its first set loss of 2013 in a 25-19 second-stanza defeat. The Lakers were undeterred, winning set three by seven before holding on for a match-deciding 25-22 win in the fourth frame.

Huntington proved to be a tough test for the Lakers. Roosevelt won the first set for the fourth straight match, cruising to a 25-13 decision, before suffering a close 25-22 second-set loss. The Lakers had their backs against the wall after losing an even closer 25-23 third-set result, but head coach Kelly Fitzgerald's charges put their resolve on display by knotting the contest with a 25-21 win in set four.

A nail-biter ensued in the last set of the night. Roosevelt trailed only once, as Huntington took the first lead of the set, and the Lakers would break a 14-14 tie by inducing back-to-back Huntington errors to earn the win.

Roosevelt resumes play at the Saint Xavier-Trinity Christian Crossover on Saturday in Palos Heights, Ill.
