Volleyball Falls In Five To IU South Bend In Saturday's CCAC Crossover Opener

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Vanessa Owusu's 20 kills and another double-double from Valerie Cutrone were not enough for the Roosevelt volleyball team in a back-and-forth affair against IU South Bend that saw the Lakers fall to the Titans in five sets, 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13, at the CCAC Crossover inside the RMU Athletic and Convocation Center on Saturday.

Marissa Minturn dished out 40 assists, and Arielle Nausieda led a staunch defensive effort with a team-best 27 digs for the Lakers (23-9, 8-5 CCAC). Emma Jarvis added 13 digs and Cutrone posted 12 bumps to go with her 13 kills.

Owusu was also solid defensively with six block assists.

IU South Bend (13-11, 9-4 CCAC) was led by Krystle Troyer's match-high 22 kills.

Roosevelt was able to hit slightly more efficiently than IU South Bend, but the Titans were able to post six more kills in six fewer attempts than the Lakers.

The Titans escaped a back-and-forth first frame by breaking a 23-23 tie and scoring the set's last two points on a Roosevelt service error and a kill by Troyer.

The Lakers responded with two straight set decisions, breaking an 18-18 tie in the second and ending with the frame's final three points before holding off the Titans' late rally with a winning Cutrone kill in the third.

With Roosevelt leading two sets to one, IU South Bend would come out strong in the fourth and lead by as many as nine. The Lakers closed the game to two on a variety of occasions before errors helped the Titans even the match with a set victory.

Roosevelt led by three in the middle of the decisive fifth set, but IU South Bend rallied back and forced a couple of ties before overcoming the Lakers with a late surge that carried the Titans to a two-point match-winning set decision.

The Lakers' last three losses have all been close five-set drawbacks.
