Women's Soccer Loses Early Lead, Match To St. Francis

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - An early one-goal lead for the Roosevelt women's soccer team evaporated after visiting St. Francis scored four unanswered goals in a high-scoring opening half to get past the Lakers, 4-1, at Toyota Park on Saturday.

Mika Reid scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Lakers (4-7-0, 0-4-0 CCAC).

Roosevelt struck first in the sixth minute, when Delaney Barrett found Reid to create a one-on-one opportunity with keeper Amanda Coleman that went in favor of the rookie striker for the early Green and White lead.

But St. Francis (8-3-0, 3-1-0 CCAC) equalized just over a minute later. A Roosevelt turnover was controlled by Liceth Robles, who was able to beat Olivia Cain for the tying tally.

The Fighting Saints took the lead in the 13th minute thanks to another goal from Roblers. Alex Truhar's corner kick was directed in Robles's direction 11 yards out in front of goal, and Robles slipped it past Cain to quickly turn a one-goal advantage for Roosevelt into a one-goal lead for St. Francis.

Just two minutes later St. Francis was awarded a penalty kick, and Brooke Polus converted the unimpeded opportunity to give St. Francis a two-goal lead.

Polus struck again in the 17th minute, taking advantage of another Laker giveaway to score St. Francis' fourth goal in a first-half offensive flurry.

That's how the match would stay, as defense ruled the rest of the day and the Lakers were unable to light the scoreboard to ignite a rally.

Cain made eight saves for the Green and White.

Roosevelt returns to the pitch this Tuesday, Oct. 15 against Judson in Elgin.
