Volleyball Defeats Indiana South Bend, Highlighting Day At Huntington Tri-Match

Huntington, Ind. - Freshman Nicole Winter's career-best 21 kills and 11 digs led the Roosevelt volleyball team past Indiana South Bend, highlighting the Lakers' performance on Saturday at the Huntington University Tri-Match. Roosevelt opened the day with a 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22 triumph over the Titans before falling in the finale to the host Foresters in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-16.
Roosevelt is now 5-33 on the season with one match remaining in its inaugural regular season. The Lakers square off with IIT on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the UIC Physical Education Building.
Saturday marked the fourth time this year that Roosevelt and Indiana South Bend have locked horns with the Titans getting the better of the battle between first-year programs having won the previous three meetings.
This time it was the Lakers that controlled play. Winter enjoyed her best performance of the year and was aided fellow freshmen Vanessa Owusu's 12 kills and Olivia Downs' 12 digs.
In set one, Roosevelt trailed by a 20-19 margin, but kills by Winter and Owusu sparked a 6-1 run that secured the game for the Lakers. Set two was more of the same. Head Coach Kelly Fitzgerald called a timeout with Roosevelt leading 20-19 and her words of wisdom led to four straight points and an eventual 25-20 win.
Despite trailing two sets to none, the Titans buckled down and controlled set three en route to a 25-16 triumph. The Lakers quieted IUSB's rally attempts in set four, leading from start to finish, securing the match with a 25-22 win.
In the nightcap, Huntington never let Roosevelt get rolling in a straight set victory. Winter led the Lakers with six kills and four digs.
