Chicago, Ill. - Freshman Maria Tamburrino was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Division I Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon, adding another 'first' to the list of accomplishments registered by the Roosevelt women's basketball team this season.
Tamburrino, who is the first female student-athlete at Roosevelt to receive conference recognition, was also a finalist for National Player of the Week honors after averaging 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.5 assists in the Lakers' two games while shooting 78 percent from the field. Roosevelt has now won a season-best four straight games and owns a 12-5 record this season.
The Jacobs High School product opened the week with a near triple-double performance, tallying a career-high 21 points, nine rebounds and nine steals in a win over Viterbo on Jan. 4. Tamburrino then guided Roosevelt to victory in its first-ever CCAC contest on Jan. 8, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds against St. Francis (Ill.).
For the season, Tamburrino is averaging 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
Tamburrino and the rest of the Lakers will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 11, when they travel to meet #24 Olivet Nazarene at 7:00 p.m.
