Waller Paces Lakers To 7th Place In GLIACs

AUGUSTA, Mich. – Marc Waller came off the proverbial bench to shoot 1-under over the final two rounds to lead Roosevelt to a seventh-place finish at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday and Friday in Augusta, Mich.

The junior from Spain began the tournament as the Lakers' alternate, but was inserted into the lineup between the two rounds Thursday. In the second round, he started off slow with a bogey on his first hole – the par-4 15th – then went on a surge over the next four holes. Waller birdied the par-5 16th then carded a par on the 17th before recording an eagle on the par-5 18th. He added another birdie on the first hole and ended his round with a birdie on the 14th to shoot 69.

Waller followed up his strong Thursday with a fairly steady Friday, shooting a 1-over 72 with four birdies on his day. He tied for the best Roosevelt round of Friday with Pierre Heylen, who rode the roller coaster of emotions. The Frenchman carded bogeys on his first three holes of the day before turning it around with an eagle on the 16th. He birdied the tricky par-3 17th as well to erase the three bogeys.

Heylen added two more birdies and three bogeys the rest of the round for his 72, moving him to 7-over for the three-round event. The sophomore shot 2-over in his first round Thursday, but couldn't hold on to his momentum in the afternoon as he slumped to a 75. He finished in 27th overall with his 7-over for the event.

Lucas Faubert had the best finish of the Lakers golfers in 21st place at 5-over for the tournament. He began the event in the red with a 1-under 70 on Thursday morning with three birdies and two bogeys in the round. He again carded mostly pars in the afternoon, but there were fewer bogeys to counteract the three bogeys on his card. The freshman finished with a 75 on Friday to close out the event.

Ben Jones was poised to challenge Faubert for top honors among the Lakers after also finishing Thursday's 36 holes at 1-over overall. However, a rough 78 on Friday knocked him down to 30th at 8-over. The freshman shot a 72 in the morning Thursday after scoring birdies on his final two holes of the round. He birdied two of his first six holes of the afternoon round and finished with an even par 71.

Matthew Webb was the only other Lakers golfer to play in all three rounds, finishing at 13-over for the event. He shot 75 in the opening round with a pair of birdies sandwiching an ugly triple bogey. The junior started the second round with a birdie but again finished with a 75 before shooting 76 on Friday.

Waller replaced Jamie Garnett in the Lakers lineup after the freshman shot a 79 in the opening round. He was just 1-over through his first nine holes, but struggled with six bogeys or worse over the last nine holes. Garnett is one of the three freshmen Roosevelt brought to the GLIAC Championships this season and the Lakers are expected to return all six players that participated in the conference championship.
