DECATUR, Ill. – Roosevelt had one of the best rounds of the day Tuesday to rise to a seventh-place finish at the Dan Salisbury Memorial hosted by Illinois-Springfield at Red Tail Run in Decatur.
The Lakers posted the second-best round of the day with a team total of 289 behind a pair of players who went under par in the final round. Jamie Garnett and Pierre Heylen both shot 1-under 71s to help Roosevelt move up the leaderboard Tuesday after a shaky start Monday.
Ben Jones paced the Lakers in Monday's opening round with a 71, carding three birdies on the back nine to shoot 2-under to close out the round. The freshman was on pace to repeat his 71 Tuesday before a triple-bogey momentarily derailed his round. He finished in a tie for 11th at 1-over for the tournament after shooting 73 in the final round.
Matthew Webb also shot a 71 on Monday, but he was playing as an individual so his score did not count toward Roosevelt's team score. The junior was tied for the lead at one point in Tuesday's final round but finished with a 73 to finish tie for 8th overall at even par for the event. Â Â
Heylen shot a 4-over 76 on Monday despite holing four birdies during his round, then minimized his mistakes Tuesday. The junior had five birdies in the final round and carded just one double-bogey or worse to help keep the momentum. He finished in a tie for 19th two shots behind Jones after tying for the second-best round of Tuesday.
Garnett struggled Monday to a team-worst 81, but he came back with a strong showing Tuesday with four birdies en route to his 71. Lucas Faubert carded just one birdie Monday in shooting a 78, but rebounded to shoot a 73 with two birdies Tuesday. Easton Holman was the final member of the Lakers squad and shot matching 79s with six total birdies.
