Marie Outlay Named GLIAC Defensive Player Of The Week

BAY CITY, Mich. – Marie Outlay was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

It is the first weekly award of the season for Outlay and the second GLIAC weekly honor of the junior's career. The Sun Prairie, Wis. native was a defensive dynamo for the Lakers, playing a large role in Roosevelt limiting opponents to 54.5 points per game and 21.2 percent from 3-point range over the weekend. In the two games, Outlay averaged 3.5 steals, 2.5 blocks and 10.5 rebounds per game to anchor the Lakers' effort on defense.

"Marie has been an anchor for us defensively this season," Roosevelt head coach Deon Thomas said. "She's accepted the challenge of guarding the other team's best player each game regardless of their position. Her knack for rebounding and her relentless pursuit of the ball has been unmatched on the defensive end for us this season."

In Thursday's win over Saginaw Valley State, Outlay recorded her fifth game this season with at least five steals as she had five thefts. She also had two blocks in the game then added three more Saturday against Lake Superior State, her third and fourth contests this year with multiple blocks. The junior also had two steals against Lake Superior State, extending her streak to 17 straight games with a steal and giving her 47 steals this season.

Outlay currently ranks second in steals per game and third in rebounds per game in the GLIAC while averaging nearly one block per game. The junior is 24 steals away from tying the Roosevelt program record for career steals and is on pace to break her own single-season record for steals.
