CHICAGO – Roosevelt could not get the shots to fall at critical times in a 59-51 setback against Lewis on Saturday afternoon in the Goodman Center.
The Lakers (1-8) made enough shots early in the game to stay on top of the Flyers, leading after both the first and second quarters. Marie Outlay scored the first six points of the game for Roosevelt before Isabella Pitta helped bring the Lakers into the lead with a pair of layups.
The lead grew from 15-14 after the first quarter to 21-14 with six straight points in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter. Pitta hit a jump shot to open the period then worked her way inside for a pair of free throws after getting fouled. Brynne Katcher closed the run with a layup inside to give Roosevelt its largest lead of the contest.
Lewis tried to make a run early in the third quarter, but twice the Flyers got within a point only for Outlay to drain another triple. The junior finished with 12 points while shooting 3 of 4 from behind the arc and added seven rebounds as well to her effort. The Flyers took the lead on a last-second shot in the third quarter, then went on an 8-0 run in the fourth to seal the game.
Roosevelt's defense did its job in the fourth quarter, limiting the Flyers to 25 percent shooting from the field and just two second-chance points. The Lakers also had six blocked shots in the final quarter to end on nine for the game, the most for a Roosevelt team in nearly two years. Outlay had four blocks to go along with her two steals and Pitta also rejected three shots for the Lakers.
Yet, the Lakers offense made just 5 of 23 in the fourth quarter despite forcing that critical 8-0 Lewis run to span more than four minutes of game time. Pitta grabbed six of her 11 rebounds in the final quarter as she notched her third consecutive double-double and fourth overall on the season with a team-best 14 points. Kelly Boyle fought her way to 11 points with several circus-like floaters through contact, including a pair in the fourth. Katcher had four points and seven rebounds and Jacqui Lukic added three points and three boards in a season-high 14 minutes.
UP NEXT: The Lakers hit the road as it resumes conference play with a short trip to Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. on New Year's Day for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
