CHICAGO – Roosevelt dropped a back-and-forth 57-52 game to Lake Superior State on Saturday at the Goodman Center in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
Neither team led by more than one possession in the fourth quarter until Lake Superior State made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to extend its advantage to four. In the final 10 minutes alone, the lead changed hands five times with four ties as the two teams traded baskets.
The hosts led after the first quarter, but Lake Superior State controlled the second quarter to lead by nine at halftime. Yet the Lakers found themselves in the locker room and came out for the third quarter with more energy and effort. Kelly Boyle made two 3-pointers out of the intermission and Isabel Lindo added a pair of baskets as part of a 10-0 run that gave Roosevelt (3-10, 2-4 GLIAC) the lead again.
Marie Outlay collected four of her 10 rebounds in the third quarter, helping to eliminate the second-chance points that hurt Roosevelt in the first half. The junior added two steals and three blocks in the game to complement her third straight double-digit rebound game.
Brynne Katcher was quietly the key for the Lakers in the game as the junior dished out five assists, picked up three steals and scored six points. More importantly, though, Katcher shut down Lake Superior State's key 3-point shooter, holding her 0 for 4 from behind the arc in the game and limiting her to just one point overall – which she scored with 11 seconds left for the final point of the game.
Boyle led the Lakers with 12 points followed by Lindo with 10 points, but it was an offensive slog for Roosevelt. The hosts finished shooting just 36.7 percent with the bench doing the heavy lifting to keep the Lakers above 33 percent. Aubrey Leonard scored nine points off the bench while Ava Brandenburg and Emma Yurich each chipped in four points as the trio shot 7 of 17 from the field.
