HOLLAND, Mich. – The Roosevelt men's and women's tennis teams headed to Holland, Michigan over the weekend to play in the Hope Invitational at Hope College.
The Lakers had some strong performances at the event, highlighted by four wins across the singles and doubles flights. Roosevelt had both finalists in the women's singles F flight as
Zeynep Barut edged out teammate
Sophie Christie for the title. Demille Scarabello rolled through his matches while dropping just three games in the E flight for men's singles.
Jules Rumeau won four matches to claim the men's singles C draw and
Juan Pablo Espinosa again teamed up with Lluc Mascaro to win the C draw for men's doubles.
Espinosa and
Chakib Madcur both won their first matches in the D singles draw before falling in the quarterfinals. The pair then won their consolation matches to set up a matchup between the teammates that was ultimate not played.
In women's action,
Lara Sener advanced to the semifinals in her singles flight as did
Ximena Mercado in the D flight.
Milena Novikova battled back to reach the consolation final in the B flight while
Nathalie Ramazzini did one step better and won the consolation final in the C flight. In doubles play, Christie and Sener advanced to the semifinals in the C flight while Mercado and
Esther Magnusson battled valiantly in the championship of the B flight before falling to a pair of Western Michigan.
Both Lakers squads will compete in duals for the first time this season on Sunday when they both face Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee.
