Lakers Open GLIAC Play At Home

CHICAGO – Roosevelt began its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule at home this past weekend with a pair of setbacks against Davenport and Grand Valley State.

On Friday, the Lakers battled Davenport with the Panthers winning the men's match 7-0 and taking the women's dual 6-1. Juan Pablo Espinosa battled into the third set at the No. 4 singles flight, taking the opening set 7-5. After falling 6-4 in the second set, the third set supertiebreaker was tense before the Panthers emerged with a 10-8 win.

Zeynep Barut was unbeaten on the women's side, teaming up with Sophie Christie for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles before claiming Roosevelt's only point in singles. The junior from Turkiye won the first set 6-4 and opened up a 2-0 lead in the second set at the third singles position before her opponent retired from the match. It came after she and Christie won 6-3 in doubles to nearly steal the doubles point for the Lakers.

In Saturday's battle of the Lakers, Grand Valley State won both matches by 6-1 scores, dropping just a singles match in both duals. Jules Rumeau prevailed on the men's side with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. On the women's side, Milena Novikova came back from dropping the opening set 6-2 to win the second set 6-3 and the third set supertiebreak 10-6 for the victory at No. 5 singles.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will play its final home match Saturday against Michigan Tech in a GLIAC dual before hitting the road for the final two weekends of conference action.
