ELMHURST, Ill. – Roosevelt tested itself against the best of the Chicagoland area over the weekend at the Chicagoland Championships hosted by Elmhurst.
The three-day meet brought together the best NAIA and NCAA track and field athletes across the region, and the Lakers held their own. The field athletes had the best competition with
Jakobi Turner leading the way with a sixth-place finish in the long jump and finishing ninth in the triple jump. The freshman was just a hair shy of his season best with a 6.35-meter long jump in Elmhurst, but he improved his outdoor season best by 30 centimeters with a 13.17-meter leap in the triple jump.
On the women's side, senior
Millicent Ghapson had her best high jump in more than two years, clearing 1.46 meters to finish in 14
th place.
Lisset Munoz set her career highs in a pair of throwing events, finishing 14
th in the discus with a distance of 30.08 meters and 16
th in the javelin at 25.90 meters.
Roosevelt's relay teams shone in the running portion of the meet with both 4x100-meter relays finishing in the top 10. The men's team of
Jerrel Calhoun,
Kenan Gaston, Turner and
Javaris Jones placed 10
th in 44.25 seconds. The women finished fifth with the quartet of
Angela Louis,
Kennilyn Alexander,
Khaniya Higginbotham and
Alexia Lohman powering home in 51.42 seconds.
