BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Zayre Uche set a new Roosevelt school record in the triple jump to win the competition at the Walter Cramer Invite hosted by Olivet Nazarene last week in Bourbonnais.
Uche's leap of 13.81 meters on his fifth attempt was a full six inches further than second place and highlighted a strong day for Roosevelt in the jumps. Kevin Martin finished seventh in the triple jump for the Lakers and also took 10th in the long jump.
The women also had a strong record in the jumping events with three top-six finishes. Kate Sundstrom finished second in the high jump with a jump of 1.36 meters then took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 4.84 meters. Makenzie Hawk's 10.25-meter triple jump finished third in the competition.
On the track, the Lakers also had big success with a plethora of top-8 finishes. Terrion Spencer set a personal record twice to take third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.03 seconds. Shortly behind Spencer was Tyrin Stewart in fifth in a time of 7.05 seconds. Heaven Adams finished in sixth in the 60 meters with a time of 8.27 seconds. Sundstrom also took home fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.87.
Khaniya Higginbotham continued her dominance of the longer sprints with a third-place finish in the 200 meters and fourth place in the 400. The senior again set the school record in the 200 with a time of 26.16 seconds while Higginbotham set a season best with a time of 1:00.53 in the 400. Gloria Romero finished sixth in the 3000 meters to cap off the Lakers' top-10 finishers.
