UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Roosevelt men scored 11 points to finish eighth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted at Saginaw Valley State.
Nearly half of the Lakers' points came from Zayre Uche, who earned five points for his fourth-place finish in the triple jump. After faulting on his first attempt, Uche was able to advance to the final jumps with a leap of 12.97 meters. In his first jump of the final round, the sophomore jumped 13.26 meters, which held on for fourth.
Roosevelt also earned five points from a pair of relay teams with the men's 4x400-meter group picking up three points by finishing sixth. The distance medley relay finished seventh to add two more points to Roosevelt's total then Terrion Spencer closed out the scoring by finishing eighth in the 60-meter dash. Tyrin Stewart finished ninth in the 60-meter prelims with a personal-best time of 6.98 seconds, but fell .02 seconds short of the final with Spencer running 6.96 seconds.
The Lakers women had several performances that kept them just off the scoring podium, but they did not score any points. Khaniya Higginbotham set the program record yet again in the 200-meter dash, but finished ninth overall despite winning her heat in a time of 25.93 seconds. Higginbotham went on to finish 11th in the 400 meters in a time of 58.8 seconds and anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that finished 10th in the conference.
Kate Sundstrom became the first Roosevelt athlete to participate in a multi-discipline event, competing in the pentathlon. She started off strong by finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles then ran 12th in the 800 meters. The freshman placed 11th in the long jump and 14th in both the high jump and shot put to finish 14th overall.
Makenzie Hawk finished 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 9.95 meters and took 17th in the long jump.
