BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Roosevelt's female sprinters and male field athletes anchored the Lakers on Saturday at the ONU Outdoor Open hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais.
Angela Louis ran a career-best 12.74 seconds in the 100 meters to take third place in the event. She then ran the anchor leg on Roosevelt's 4x100-meter relay team, guiding the Lakers to first place in 50.25 seconds. Another leg on that relay team was
Khaniya Higginbotham, who ran personal bests in the 200 and 400 meters Saturday. Higginbotham took fourth place in both events, finishing the 200 in 26.75 seconds and the 400 in one minute and 22 milliseconds.
Lainey Canan and
Kennilyn Alexander rounded out the championship relay squad for the Lakers.
In the field events for the women,
Alexia Lohman took seventh place in the triple jump and set her personal best of 4.40 meters in the long jump.
Abby Nelson finished seventh in the javelin with a career-long toss of 22.06 meters, breaking her previous best by more than two meters.
Roosevelt's male field athletes also had a great Saturday at the meet with a plethora of top-10 finishes.
Jakobi Turner finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.31 meters before rising up to claim second in the triple jump at 13.22 meters.
Twon Jones placed 10
th in the triple jump to give the Lakers a pair of top-10 finishers.
The Lakers also had two top-10s in the javelin with
Kieran Cassidy taking sixth and Cameron Vahldick placing eighth. Vahldick, a baseball pitcher in high school, continued his steady improvement with yet another personal best mark in the event.
On the track,
Javaris Jones had the best placement for the men with an eighth-place finish in the 200 meters. He also took 11
th in the 400 meters while
Tyrin Stewart finished 14
th in the 100 meters with a time of 11.04 seconds.
The Lakers are now preparing for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships held Wednesday through Friday at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.
