BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Five Roosevelt school records fell Saturday at the ONU Holiday Open hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais.
The highlight of the efforts came from Kate Sundstrom in a thrilling 60-meter hurdles final. The freshman from Utah finished third in the preliminaries then came back to take the win in the final on a photo finish. Sundstrom's 9.39 edged out her rival from Saint Xavier by eight thousandths of a second to claim the title and the school record.
Khaniya Higginbotham made noise in the 200-meter dash with a school-record time of 26.45 to finish in third place. The other three record-breaking performances came on the field side with Makenzie Hawk setting the new standard in the long jump (4.88 meters) and the triple jump (10.54 meters) while Jonathan Sears set a record with a 13.94-meter toss in the weight throw.
It was a great day for the field athletes overall with Hawk claiming sixth in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Zayre Uche claimed the triple jump title on the men's side with a leap of 12.97 meters and Kevin Martin finished fourth at 12.35 meters. Millicent Ghapson took home fifth place in the high jump, matching Sears' finish in the weight throw.
Elsewhere on the track, Gloria Romero easily took home the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:36 and the Lakers had three top-eight finishers in the women's mile. Cristin Moreno edged out Romero for fourth place by a second, finishing in 5:44, while Shelsee Isassi ran a 6:26 to finish eighth. Higginbotham also placed third in the 400 meters in 1:01.16 while Heaven Adams finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with an 8.22.
In the men's part of the track meet, Javaris Jones had the best day with a second-place finish in the 400 along with a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters. Jones won his heat of the 200 with ease, but his mark was just .002 seconds behind fourth place, who ran in a different heat. The sophomore also easily won the opening heat of the 400 and wasn't topped until the final heat of the day.
Tyrin Stewart qualified fifth in the 60-meter dash but improved in the finals up to fourth place with a 7.04. Zabon Robinson took home fifth place in the 400 as a freshman and Jeremy Wilson claimed sixth in the 800 meters.
