Lakers Trio Earns All-GLIAC Postseason Honors

BAY CITY, Mich. – Luka Malinka, Marie Outlay and Jayla Turchin all earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason honors, the league announced Friday morning.

The three Lakers played an important role in Roosevelt earning the No. 6 seed in the GLIAC Tournament with a 10-10 record in conference play. Malinka and Turchin were both named to the all-GLIAC second team while Outlay was a member of the conference's all-defensive team. It is the third straight all-conference honor for Turchin and second all-defensive team honor for Outlay while it is a first for Malinka in her collegiate career.

Malinka, a senior guard from Denmark, ranked second in the GLIAC this season at 15.4 points per game and also was second with 2.5 3-pointers made per game. She was a 36.5 percent 3-point shooter for the Lakers and ranked fourth in the conference by making more than 85 percent of her free throws.

It was a career year overall for Malinka, who topped 20 points seven times this year, including a career-best 35 in a win over Purdue Northwest. She set a school record against Michigan Tech by making all 20 free throws in the game, the most free throws a Division II women's player has made this season.

"Luka's ability to score at three levels was huge for us this season," Roosevelt head coach Deon Thomas said. "She was second leading scorer in one of the toughest conferences in the country and she stepped up big for us this season."

Turchin leaves Roosevelt as one of the better players in the program's history, finishing with 1,094 points in three seasons for the Lakers. The senior from Evanston averaged 13 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, but sneakily also added nearly two steals per contest as well. This season, Turchin also had the most assists she's had at Roosevelt, ranking second on the team with 72 helpers.

"Jay has been our go-to scorer for the last three seasons," Thomas said, "and I am so proud of how she finished her career in a Lakers uniform. Teams sent their best defenders at her every night with her ability to score at-will, and she still dominated. I am proud of her for receiving an all-conference accolade."

Outlay was a strong contender for GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 3.3 steals per game. The sophomore was the CCAC Defensive Player of the Year last season, and only improved upon her marks in almost every category. She broke the school record for steals in a season for the second straight year, one-upping herself with 88 thefts this season. The Wisconsin native also tied the record for most steals in a game with nine, including the game-winning steal in the final seconds, against Wayne State

In addition to the steals, Outlay ranked eighth in blocks per game with 22 in 27 appearances and her 6.8 rebounds per game ranked ninth in the league. That is three more blocks and nearly two rebounds per game better than her first season with the Lakers. Outlay also raised her scoring average 2.5 points to 11.8 points per game while playing six more minutes per night.

"Marie makes us go," Thomas said. "She does all the little things in games that don't always end up on the stat sheet. She always rises to the occasion of guarding the other team's best player. She is nowhere near her ceiling yet, so I am excited to watch her grow these next two years in the GLIAC."
