CHICAGO – Roosevelt senior
Luka Malinka and sophomore
Marie Outlay were both named to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday.
Malinka was a second-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection after finishing second in the league in scoring at 15.4 points per game. The senior from Denmark had seven 20-point performances this season, including a career-high 35 against Purdue Northwest on Feb. 10. She also set the school record by making all 20 free throws against Michigan Tech on Feb. 22.
Outlay was once again a defensive dynamo for the Lakers, earning All-GLIAC Defensive Team honors in her second season. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin native broke her own school record with 88 steals this season, including tying the school record with nine against Wayne State on Feb. 17. She also averaged nearly 12 points and seven rebounds per game for the Lakers this season.
In order to be named to the Academic All-District teams, a student-athlete not only hold at least a 3.5 grade point average as a sophomore or older, but also must have either appeared in 90 percent of a team's games or started 2/3 of a team's contests. The list of all-district honorees is then vetted by the CSC committee, who send out a ballot for All-American honors to the membership.
The Academic All-America program is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports in all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions. It was established in 1952 and the honorees are nominated by CSC members then All-American honors are voted on by the membership as well.
