BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Roosevelt's first journey through the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference ended Wednesday night in the conference tournament quarterfinals with a 67-58 loss to Ferris State in Big Rapids.
The sixth-seeded Lakers end their inaugural season in Division II with a 12-15 record, including a 10-10 mark in conference play. They looked poised to extend their season into Saturday's semifinals after a blistering start to Wednesday's contest. Roosevelt made its first three shots to take a 7-0 lead and force a Ferris State timeout, and made five of its first seven attempts to open a 12-point lead halfway through the quarter.
Most of the Lakers' early success came on the interior with precise cuts and smart passes to leave themselves with open layups.
Kencia Levasseur was a perfect 4 for 4 from the field for nine points in the game as the main beneficiary of the motion offense. The junior scored the first two baskets of the game for the Lakers before
Jalyssa Carrasco knocked down an open 3-pointer.
Roosevelt cooled down after the initial burst, but the Lakers still finished the first quarter 4 of 9 from the 3-point range and 7 of 18 overall to lead by five points after 10 minutes. Even though the Lakers weren't as effective on offense in the second quarter, they didn't let the Bulldogs actually surpass them until a minute remained in the half.
Down by two at halftime, the Lakers regained their energy to start the third quarter with six quick points. Roosevelt finished the third quarter 7 of 11 from the floor to fight back and take the game into the final quarter tied at 48.
Luka Malinka led the Lakers with 15 points, knocking down three 3-pointers in her final collegiate game.
Marie Outlay finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, but most importantly, the sophomore made more history on defense. For the second straight year, Outlay broke the single-season record for steals, poking away a pass in the fourth quarter for her 88
th steal of the year. She now ranks fifth all-time in steals and is just 71 steals away from tying the program record.
Roosevelt stayed competitive for much of the fourth quarter, but Ferris State was able to slowly pull away by hitting contested shots and crowding the Lakers. Roosevelt missed all nine of its 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter and made just 3 of 18 overall, and still had the ball with less than two minutes left trailing by only three.
In addition to Malinka, Wednesday was the final game for Carrasco,
Lexie Sinclair and
Jayla Turchin. Carrassco finished with six assists and eight rebounds to go along with five points. Turchin scored eight and grabbed seven rebounds while Sinclair scored seven points and had a block as well.
