CALEDONIA, Mich. – Freshman
Lara Sener did not drop a set as she cruised to the title in the C flight of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals over the weekend at Davenport.
After receiving a bye in the round of 32, Sener failed to drop a game in the round of 16 against an opponent from McKendree. Facing the fourth seed in the bracket, the freshman battled to a 7-5, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals then took down a player from UISÂ 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. The No. 2 seed in the C flight was no match for Sener, either, as the Lakers player triumphed 6-2, 6-0 to claim the title.
The C flight was good to the Lakers as
Malena Moya advanced to the quarterfinals of the bracket as well. The junior defeated a player from Quincy 6-3, 6-0 before facing that second-seeded player from Davenport. Both of the first two sets went to a tiebreaker with Moya claiming the first one and her opponent the second. In the supertiebreaker, Moya was edged out 10-8.
Roosevelt had some success in the consolation bracket of the A and B flights with a pair of players advancing to the consolation quarterfinals.
Esther Magnusson defeated a strong player from Quincy in her first consolation match then edged out a foe from Rockhurst in straight sets. The freshman from Sweden eventually fell to a player from Findlay in the A flight consolations.
In the B flight,
Nathalie Ramazzini claimed a 6-3, 7-6(2) win over Ferris State in the first round of the championship bracket before losing to the No. 3 seed from Grand Valley State.
Sophie Christie lost a three-set heartbreaker to a player from Michigan Tech in the first round, but bounced back to upend a player from UIS in three sets and a player from Indianapolis in straight sets. Her run ended in the quarterfinals against an opponent from Davenport.
Doubles was a bit tougher for the Lakers, but two pairings in the B flight were able to make some noise. Christie and Moya won a tight 9-8(6) battle against a duo from Michigan Tech, but then withdrew from the rest of doubles play.
Zeynep Barut and Ramazzini lost a tough 8-6 match to UIS in the first championship round, but battled back to claim the consolation bracket.
The run began with a 9-7 win over a pair from McKendree then the duo defeated Davenport 8-5 in the quarterfinals. A forfeit in the semifinals put Barut and Ramazzini in perfect position to take down the fourth-seeded duo from McKendree 8-4.
