ELGIN, Ill. – Roosevelt had mixed results Saturday when the two tennis programs headed to Judson to face a former conference rival in Elgin.
The women were able to hold off the Eagles 5-2 with dominant efforts at the bottom of the singles lineup. However, the men lost several tight matches in 5-2 loss to Judson on the road.
The Lakers easily claimed the doubles point on the women's side then quickly secured the victory with wins at the fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions.
Nathalie Ramazzini took home the point at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-0 while
Milena Novikova won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-0.
Ximena Mercado claimed the No. 6 point with a 6-1, 6-1 win to put the focus on the top of the lineup.
Esther Magnusson edged out her opponent 6-3, 6-4 at the top singles spot while the Lakers lost No. 2 singles in two tight sets and the third singles position in three sets.
On the men's side, the Lakers were bitterly close to winning the doubles point with the top position requiring a tiebreak and the No. 2 and 3 spots falling 6-4.
Justus Peters won the first point of the day for Roosevelt's men with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, but straight-set setbacks at No. 2 and 3 put the Lakers on the edge.
Juan Pablo Espinosa was able to hold at No. 1 singles with a 7-6, 6-4 nailbiter while No. 4 and No. 5 singles needed three sets.
Abhay Singh won his first set 6-1 at the fourth singles spot, but could not sustain that momentum.
Lluc Mascaro Sierra lost the opening set 6-2, but battled back to force a third with a win in a tiebreaker. In the super-tiebreaker third set, Mascaro was edged out 10-7.
UP NEXT: The Roosevelt men next take the court on Oct. 25 at Olivet Nazarene while the women face Winona State on the road Saturday in Minnesota.
