Lakers Sail Past Saints Behind Shutdown Defense

Box Score

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Roosevelt led from start to finish Saturday afternoon to collect its fourth straight Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory with an 83-68 triumph over Holy Cross in South Bend, Ind.

The Lakers (9-9, 7-3 CCAC) came out ready to play and raced out to a 15-4 lead midway through the first quarter. The defense set the tone for Roosevelt by holding the Saints to just 2 of 13 shooting in the first quarter while Alexia Lohman provided an early spark off the bench. The freshman scored seven of her 11 points in the opening 10 minutes, sinking all three of her shots, including one from behind the arc.

Roosevelt continued its strong offensive performance in the second quarter by making 53 percent of its shots, including shooting 4 of 7 from deep, to push the lead to 11 at halftime. The Saints struggled to score in the third quarter from the field while the Lakers held them under 28 percent shooting. The Lakers then closed out the game with authority by making 7 of 9 from the floor in the fourth quarter to push the lead to as many as 21.

The overall offensive efficiency ran through the entire lineup with five Lakers finishing in double figures. Kristen Keys led Roosevelt's squad with 15 points by making six of her nine shots in the game. Malou Savanna followed up with 14 points on 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point range while Jalyssa Carrasco and Jayla Turchin each scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Carrasco was a perfect 4 for 4 from the floor while Lohman was 5 of 7 in the game for her 11 points.

The strong defensive output also helped turn into offense with the Lakers scoring 23 points off the 21 turnovers they forced. Roosevelt finished with 13 steals as four different players tied for the team lead with three steals apiece. Marie Outlay was one of those three, bringing her to a team-best 50 total thefts this season.

This year's Roosevelt squad is the third team in program history to start at least 7-3 in conference play, joining the 2017-18 and 2012-13 teams. The 2023-24 Lakers will now try to surpass the team from six years ago by moving to 8-3 in the league when they return home Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Governors State.
