Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, Ill. – A depleted Roosevelt lineup could not match Cornerstone's offense in a midweek non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont.
After a busy weekend, the Lakers (19-15) were missing the middle of their infield and two of their better bats in the lineup for the doubleheader against the Golden Eagles. Kate Sisson kept Roosevelt in the first game for as long as possible before taking a tough-luck 4-2 loss in the opener. Seren Horton threw her first complete game of the year on her Senior Day in an 8-4 loss in the second game.
The Lakers celebrated Sisson, Horton as well as catcher Kirstin Fudge and outfielder Eliza Belter between games of Tuesday's doubleheader. Although Belter was held out of action due to injury, each of the other three honorees had their share of wonderful moments against Cornerstone despite the outcomes.
Sisson struck out a season-best 11 batters in her seven innings of work in the opener, moving her past 300 career punchouts in her career. The Martinsville, Indiana native is now just two strikeouts away from tying Morgan Vogt for the most career strikeouts in program history. She needed every one of those strikeouts against the Golden Eagles to help escape some of the jams in which she found herself.
In the first inning, Sisson allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the game but managed to come up with a big strikeout with runners on the corners before inducing the inning-ending pop out to Fudge behind the plate. She struck out all three batters she faced in the second inning then added two more in the fourth after a leadoff single. She finished the day with a strikeout as well to stop the bleeding in the seventh inning.
Roosevelt began the scoring in the opener on an odd play in the bottom of the first. Emma Wokurka walked then Athena Pomele-Pen followed with an infield single to put two runners on with one out. Two batters later, Samantha Norman smashed a single up the middle that allowed Wokurka to score easily. However, the Cornerstone centerfielder misplayed the ball and Pomele-Pen was able to advance to third base. In an attempt to nab Pomele-Pen running for third, the centerfielder bounced the throw to third base and it skipped past the bag. Pomele-Pen tried to take advantage of a potential second error on the play, but was thrown out at home by the third baseman.
The scoreline remained the same until the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles finally converted the two singles to lead off the inning into two runs to take the lead. Trailing by a run in the bottom of the sixth, Pomele-Pen delivered a two-out single, which was followed by a Bailee Reynolds double into the gap in right center to tie the game. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the top of the seventh to reclaim the lead after a Roosevelt error to lead off the frame then the Lakers couldn't match in the bottom half of the frame.
Cornerstone wasted no time scoring in the second game with Horton being tagged for two runs on two hits in the first inning. Horton allowed 12 hits and eight runs – only six of which were earned – in her longest outing of the season, and was credited with two walks and no strikeouts. She was able to escape unscathed in the second with a runner on third base, but the Golden Eagles scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth then added another insurance marker in the seventh.
After Norman reached on an error in the second inning, Fudge followed with an infield single and Isabella Walton reached on a fielder's choice where the Cornerstone third baseman was unable to tag out Norman on a hard grounder. However, Roosevelt could not convert the bases-loaded situation with one out and the score remained 2-0.
Scout Kram reached on an error to start the third inning, advancing to second on the same play, but it took until there were two outs before she scored. Reynolds again delivered with a double, this time over the left fielder's head, to halve the deficit. Brynn Dvoracek drove in Fudge in the fourth inning to cut the score to 4-2 before the Lakers started to heat up in the fifth.
Trinity Kelly, who came in to pinch hit earlier in the game, started the rally with a single up the middle to lead off the fifth. Reynolds singled then Norman walked to load the bases with one out, setting the stage for Fudge to drive a line drive to left field for a sacrifice fly RBI. Walton followed with a single through the left side to cut the deficit to 7-4, but the rally stopped there. Kelly tried to start another rally with a double to center field in the sixth, but she was stranded at second by some strong defense from Cornerstone.
The Lakers will finish off their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season Friday with a rescheduled doubleheader against Calumet St. Joseph starting at 11 a.m. After Tuesday's results around the conference, Roosevelt will be the No. 4 seed in the CCAC Tournament with a sweep of the Crimson Wave, but it can finish no lower than fifth with just a single win Friday.
