Box Score 2 SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Roosevelt split its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Indiana University South Bend despite a pair of stellar pitching performances in the circle.
Samantha Norman allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in six innings to propel the Lakers (15-13, 7-7 CCAC) to a 3-0 win over the Titans in the first game. Kate Sisson, who pitched a perfect seventh for her second save of the season in the opener, allowed a first-inning homer among the six hits she gave up in a tough-luck 1-0 loss in the second half of the doubleheader.
After a scoreless first, Roosevelt struck in the top of the second inning with Bailee Reynolds leading off with a single into left field. Kirstin Fudge followed up by smacking a double into left field to bring Reynolds around for the first run. In an unfortunate sign of things to come, the Lakers could not find the hit to score Fudge from third after a sacrifice bunt and stranded her 60 feet away.
The only time Norman was in any trouble against the Titans came in the bottom of the third when she allowed a leadoff triple to left. However, she responded by striking out the next three batters she faced, two of which went down swinging, to escape the jam. The only other base runners Norman allowed were a walk in the first inning and a hit batter in the fifth, neither of which advanced past first base.
Roosevelt had its chance to break open the game in the fourth when the first three batters who stepped to the plate all reached base. Only one runner scored on Brynn Dvoracek's single into center field then a second run came in two batters later when Scout Kram slapped a single into left field. Yet the bases stayed loaded as each of the next two batters were able to get the ball out of the infield, ending the rally. The Lakers would also strand runners on the corners in the fifth inning and fail to score with runners on second and third with one out in the sixth.
Sisson made just one mistake in her start, allowing a home run to the second batter she faced, but otherwise was in control. She walked just one hitter and struck out just one as well while pitching all six innings for the Lakers. The senior stranded runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings before retiring the final seven batters she faced in the game.
Unfortunately, Sisson didn't receive the same offensive support as Norman with Roosevelt able to put one runner on second base all game. The Lakers had a leadoff single in the first inning before three consecutive flyouts to the outfield ended the threat. A two-out single in the second went for naught, and the leadoff single in third was Roosevelt's only big chance.
Anaisa Lozada provided that third-inning base hit up the middle then Kram replaced her at second on a fielder's choice. Athena Pomele-Pen beat out a double play ball herself then advanced to second when the throw from the shortstop sailed wide. That was as close as any Lakers runner got to scoring with a two-out single in the fourth being stranded and a sixth-inning single erased by a double-play ball.
The Lakers are currently scheduled to face Trinity International on Thursday for a CCAC doubleheader at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont starting at 4 p.m. Please follow @RooseveltLakers on Twitter for any updates to the schedule.
