RU Streak Halted On Michigan Road Trip

Box Score

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt's five-game winning streak came to an end Monday in a 98-70 setback against NCAA Division II Hillsdale in Hillsdale, Mich.

The Lakers (6-7) were able to keep pace with the Chargers in the first quarter behind strong efforts from Kencia Levasseur and Jayla Turchin, who scored 18 of Roosevelt's 21 points in the quarter. Turchin scored 11 off the bench in those opening 10 minutes, drilling 3 of 4 from behind the arc, while Levasseur added seven points on 3 of 4 shooting and a free throw.

Despite leading after that first quarter, however, Roosevelt was unable to keep the momentum and allowed 10 of the first 12 points of the second quarter. The Lakers shot just 4 of 14 from the field in the second quarter while Hillsdale made 9 of 19 from the floor to take a 17-point lead into halftime. The same struggles plagued Roosevelt in the third quarter as the deficit ballooned to as many as 32 points. However, the Lakers were able to win the fourth quarter to finish the game strong.

Roosevelt's quickness and athleticism was overmatched by Hillsdale's dominance on the interior. The Chargers outscored the Lakers 48-26 in the paint and scored 18 second-chance points off 23 offensive rebounds. The Lakers managed to grab just 25 rebounds in the loss while allowing 61 to the Chargers. Turchin led Roosevelt with five boards alongside Chyna Scott.

Turchin led the way offensively with 18 points and Levasseur added 11 as the two shot a combined 11 of 15 from the floor. The rest of the Lakers were 14 of 52, led by nine points from Scott and eight from Lauren Gillion. Roosevelt made just eight of its 30 3-point attempts as well as it tried to claw back into the game after the halftime deficit.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Lakers, who return to action Wednesday in South Bend, Ind. against Indiana South Bend at 4:30 p.m.
