ST. LOUIS, Mo. - In her first game action since 2017, senior Monica Munoz showed she still has the skills that have already etched her name as one of the top players in Roosevelt history.
Munoz scored a game-tying goal in the 77th minute, helping the Roosevelt women's soccer team open the Luke Blakely era with a 1-1 road tie at Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) on Sunday.
After missing all of 2018 due to a leg injury, Munoz looked like she didn't miss a beat. She took a match-high six shots, including five against target, and eventually found paydirt in with 13 minutes remaining in regulation by beating keeper Camilla Chaves for a clutch strike.
HSSU had taken the lead in the 37th minute on Yuliana Noyola Miranda's goal before Munoz's late heroics.
Roosevelt controlled possession in the overtime sessions but could not get the golden goal.
Alexis Kane took three shots, while keepers Kelsey Heaton and Sara Hernandez made a save apiece.
The match was Roosevelt's season opener and first regular-season contest with Blakely on the sidelines as RU head coach.
Roosevelt hosts an exhibition against Rhodes (Tenn.) on Sept. 8 at IIT's Stuart Field at 10 a.m. before resuming regular season action on the road against Bethel (Ind.) three days later.
