FAYETTE, Iowa – Roosevelt settled for a 2-2 opening-day draw Thursday against Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa.
The Lakers (0-0-1) forced three saves out of the Peacocks' goalkeeper in the first half before Regina Rosales finally opened the tally in the 44th minute. The junior scored her first career goal to give Roosevelt a 1-0 edge at halftime off an assist from senior Mackenzie Alvarez.
Nearly 15 minutes into the second half, Roosevelt struck again to double its lead. This time it was freshman Dayami Arias getting on the scoresheet with her first career goal with assists going to Olivia Lange and Ella De Sousa. The Lakers continued to apply pressure onto the Peacocks goal after the second goal with four shots in a 10-minute span that all missed the target.
Kaylee Sarnicola earned her first career start for the Lakers in goal, and the freshman made four saves in her debut. However, Upper Iowa stunned Roosevelt with two goals in the final five minutes to snatch a point from a game the Lakers dominated for most of the first 80 minutes.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns home Sunday for Senior Day at noon against Jamestown. The Lakers will honor their five seniors prior to the match.
