Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team was stymied by St. Ambrose pitcher Christina Pembrook, who tossed 6.1 innings across two games to get a win and a save in propelling the Bees' doubleheader sweep of the Lakers at The Ballpark at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex on Tuesday night.
The Lakers (7-22, 1-9 CCAC) had a seventh-inning rally fueled by pinch hitters but were too far behind after St. Ambrose (21-9, 6-0 CCAC) scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings of game one to take an 11-2 decision.
Roosevelt rallied back from a 6-0 deficit with a five-run third to get within a run of the Bees, but Pembrook came on in relief to halt the rally and pitch three shutout innings to close the door in a 12-6 SAU decision.
Kassie Kawka drove in two runs and scored twice in game two, while Caitlyn Santiago and Aisley Njissang joined Kawka with two-hit performances.
Game one wasn't much fun for the hosts until the seventh, when Ayumi Davis reached on an error and Kendra Lee and Alyssa Flores had back-to-back hits to load the bases. The fourth consecutive pinch hitter of the frame, Hailey Getz, hit a ground ball to short that was misplayed and allowed two runs to cross the plate.
But reliever Sarah Willman recorded outs against the next three hitters to end the threat and the game.
Pembrook started the opener and pitched 3.1 innings of one-hit softball before being lifted after Haley Huss broke up her no-hit bid.
Game two began in similar rough fashion to game one, as started Madison Lentz retired the first two St. Ambrose hitters before Madelyn Thompson hit a solo shot to start the scoring.
SAU scored five runs in the second inning to chase Lentz, with Camryn Williams coming on to pitch four solid innings of relief.
Roosevelt got on the board with a big third that saw nine Lakers come to the plate. Kawka's two-run triple and run-scoring doubles by McKayla Bowen and Cam Wicker spurred the cause. Riley Landenberger had a sac fly RBI to the shortstop that also contributed a run and helped the Lakers close the gap to a single tally.
But St. Ambrose scored a run in each of the next two innings, and after Roosevelt responded with Njissang's RBI hit to drive in Kawka, the Bees tacked on a four-spot in the sixth.
With Pembrook summoned to the circle once again, the Lakers could only muster two hits against the SAU ace.
Roosevelt continues its busy week with road games at Saint Xavier on Thursday.
