WHEELING, Ill. – The Roosevelt softball team was three outs away from a doubleheader sweep of host Trinity International, but the Trojans rallied to walk off in the bottom of the seventh with a 2-1 nightcap decision after the Lakers defeated TIU 7-3 in the opener at Heritage Park on Saturday.
Cam Wicker went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the opener to key the victory, while Megan Crymes scored the second game's sole run for Roosevelt (11-28, 5-13 CCAC) on an error in the top of the sixth.
Roosevelt received top-notch pitching all day. Aisley Njissang struck out seven and allowed just three runs in a complete-game victory during a contest in which she also had two hits at the plate.
Brianna McCormick had a rare start in game two and also went the distance in shutting out the Trojans (12-23, 5-14 CCAC) for six frames before the fateful seventh.
The first two hitters in TIU's half of the seventh singled, and they both got into scoring position against McCormick on a passed ball. Madison Lenzke then smacked a double into left center to plate the tying and winning runs to stun the Lakers in what had been quite the duel between McCormick and Trojan hurler Taylor Carli.
Njissang and Kassie Kawka also drove in runs for the Lakers during their opening win, which also saw RU take advantage of three TIU errors.
Roosevelt hosts Trinity Christian this Tuesday evening at The Ballpark at The Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont.
